Dear Bellmawr Learning Community Member,

Week # 10! Wow! It is difficult to believe that we have been doing this for ten years and I believe we are doing a yeoman’s job of keeping people connected.

This week Bell Oaks is sponsoring a Spirit week I hope you have a chance to participate in the fun activities that have been planned.  I know the elementary schools are planning something for next week.

I’m enjoying the lessons with the principals, the book readings, zoom meeting and the DOJO activities our teachers have created. Aren’t they just amazing!?!?

There are many special activities being planned for our 8th grade students. Parents have created an Adopt An 8th grade student effort which is so special; the school has planned a virtual graduation ceremony which includes special touches.  I think you’ll be happy with what is being done.   If the Governor allows us to plan an in-person event we will do so, but it appears that is unlikely. I have spoken with my colleagues in k-8 districts and we are all following the same guidelines.   I will inform you of any changes we make.

We are following the situation at the Atilis gym across the street from Bell Oaks. We had to change the date of food distribution due to the congestion there.  I am hopeful that we will be able to continue distributing food tomorrow as planned.  Be careful driving around Bellmawr today.  It is quite crowded, and someone has directed parking to our plot so be careful on Browning Road.  We are keeping an eye on the situation and will inform you of changes that may need to be made.

Please remember that you can always contact the teachers, principals and me for anything you are having difficulty accomplishing.  We are here to help you through this time. We miss you and want the best for your health and your safety.

Warm Regards,

Annette Castiglione

Dear Bellmawr Community Members,

It is the beginning of a much-needed spring break! Your children and our staff members have been working very hard these last three weeks to ensure that instruction continues. Now it is time to rest! I do not have definitive information about our return to school so I am thinking remote instruction will continue when we return on April 20, 2020.  Of course, I will notify you should a change occur.  In the meantime, I wanted to share with you some of the happenings in and around our schools.

Preschool

Several of our preschool connections have created behavioral/social/emotional resources that would be helpful for you. We are planning to put specific resources on Dojo on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The information will be posted on Bellmawr Park School Dojo and Burke School Dojo.  This way any family using Dojo has access and all the preschool and elementary families can use these resources.

All Schools

Teachers have connected with most of their students.  If you are still having trouble getting instructional packets please contact your child’s teacher directly.

Extracurricular advisors will be contacting their participants to continue some interaction with them. This has already begun for some sports.

Grading for fourth Marking Period

We are working with Genesis to move to Pass/Unsatisfactory for the fourth marking period.  The first three marking period grades will determine GPA. Honors, etc.

Teachers are working in teams to develop an assessment that would cover the skills taught during remote instruction. We will use this to determine how to inform instruction when we return. We had a professional development day scheduled for June 5th, Whether or not we have returned to school we will use this day to provide teachers with professional development. As such it will be a non-instructional day as planned in our 19-20 calendar.

Standardized testing has been cancelled for this year as have all requirements for teacher and principal observations, evaluations, Student Growth Objectives (SGO)and Student Growth Percentiles (SGP) have been lifted for the remainder of the year.

Special Education

Mrs. Bartley and the CST have already conducted 75 IEP Annual reviews. Testing for those students referred to the team   will resume once we return to school. Some pieces of the testing process can be done remotely.

Food Distribution will continue April 20, 2020

I hope you are enjoying the messages on each of the schools. We truly miss you and your children.

Warmest Regards,

Annette Castiglione

April 3, 2020

 Dear Bellmawr Learning Community Member,

We are now beginning week four of our school closure. I want to begin by thanking the countless number of individuals who have continued to work and volunteer to help ensure that our students are being fed and have technology to use. Our teachers are managing as they learn a whole new way to teach and learn, while raising and assisting their own children with the learning challenges they face. Our community is pulling together in so many ways with groups of people helping the sick and elderly with food distribution, volunteering to help with our meal distribution each week.  It is truly remarkable how we all come together to support one another in times of hardship.

We have made some decisions regarding grading and spring break that I wanted to share with all of you. There have been hours of discussion on these topics, and I realize these decisions will not be welcomed by everyone. Yet, decisions must be made, and, as always, I will continue to make decisions that I believe are in the best interest of our kids, our staff, and our community.

Spring Break

Spring break will go on as planned. Our staff, our students, our parents, and our support staff who are working tirelessly to get meals and technology out to our students, need time to recharge their batteries. Our kids and teachers can use this time to catch up. This new learning environment is a challenge for all, and this break will afford us the opportunity to take a deep breath, catch up where we need to, and spend time with one another without dealing with the challenges that remote learning has presented to all of us.

At this time, we are not certain that we will return to school on April 20, 2020. The President has said it is likely that we will stay out until the first week in May.  I want you to know that we are prepared for either scenario. Our teachers are planning for remote instruction if we do not return on April 20th. The Governor has said he will render a decision on April 13th,

Third and Fourth Marking Periods

The third marking period ended on Friday April 3, 2020. Report cards will be distributed as planned on April 9, 2020 which is also the beginning of Spring Break. Fourth marking period begins Monday April 6,2020. It is likely that we will move to a different measure of grading for fourth marking period. That will certainly depend upon how long we are out of school. In any event it is the expectation that your child(ren) complete the assignments he/she has been given. Our teachers are working tirelessly to address issues with remote learning, the need for packets and know the importance of communicating with you and your children. Please help us by reminding your children of the importance of completing their assignments to the best of their ability. And remember you can always reach out to the teachers, the principal or me with any questions you may have.

It is critical that we all remain flexible, understanding, and communicative during this period. Finding the correct balance in recognition of the immense responsibilities we all share right now is critical to our social and emotional well-being. I will continue to communicate this to our staff, as well.

PreK Registration

Registration for pre k concluded March13th.  At this time, our classes are full.  We of course will resume the registration process when we return but those children will be placed on a waiting list.

Summer Camp Registration

The last weeks of March had been devoted to camp registration. Right now, we are not in the position to take registrations for camp.  We intend to open that process as soon as we return. The same holds true for our CARE program.

Last Days of School 2019-20

I am painfully aware of the many wonderful activities that mark the beginning of spring in our district: 4th grade transition, all the wonderful 8th grade activities, our Multicultural Fair, Art Show, Green Fair, spring sports, field days, NJHS to name just a few.  We are talking about how we might celebrate some of these things if we come back before the last day official day of school which will be Friday, June 12, 2020.  We are also exploring how to do some of these things during the summer if we are able.

Thank you for being our educational partners. I am very aware of the added stress this has placed on our parents. If we continue to communicate with kindness and consideration, we can manage these challenges and overcome them together. Please remember to visit our district web site, Facebook pages, the schools’ websites and of course the teachers’ pages.  I have viewed so many fantastic lessons. I hope you get a chance to see them too.

I am amazed by the creative ways that our staff, students, and community are engaging with one another through social media. These happy communications do help all of us better cope with the added stress we are under.

Stay safe and healthy everyone,

Warmest Regards,

 Annette Castiglione

Dear Bellmawr Community Member

I hope you received my text sent on 3-25-20 stating that at this time schools will be closed until April 20, 2020, which is the Monday after spring break.  I want you to know that this date may change and is contingent upon the guidance that we receive from the Governor, the Department of Health and the CDC.  Our main goal is to keep our children and their families safe from this virus.

In the meantime, our staff has been working tirelessly preparing meaningful lessons for their students.  Teaching remotely is new for most of us, yet each day our staff finds new ways to communicate with one another and with you! Please help your children be responsive to the assignments from the teachers.  We want this time to be as productive as it can be given the circumstances. You will be receiving third marking period report cards as scheduled.  We are discussing the best way to handle fourth marking period.  That of course will depend upon where we are with our remote learning. More to come on this.  In any event we hope you will enjoy spring break (April 9th-April 20th). No new work will be assigned during those days.  You can use that time to catch up as needed. Hopefully, we will be able to enjoy spring weather.

Our custodians are still working cleaning our schools and our food services crew is working with Mr. Doyle preparing and distributing food packets.  Please continue to check our website for food distribution information and other updates.

I hope you are sharing Super Stories with your children. I am enjoying reading those books, though it has taken me quite a long time to establish a strong working relationship with YouTube!

I am so proud of the work everyone is doing during these trying times. THANK YOU. We are remaining strong, positive and committed to our families. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have.

Warm Regards,

Annette Castiglione

Annette Castiglione

Monday, March 23

Good afternoon Bellmawr families of students in Pre-K, K and first grade,

When we began remote instruction a week ago, we distributed learning packets to your children. I indicated at the time that I would decide on 3/30/20 whether we would continue with remote instruction.  The Governor made it clear Saturday, that we will be out for an indefinite period.   Because of that our instruction for your children will change. We want to be able to communicate as effectively as we can with each of you. In a few days, maybe as early as tomorrow, you will be receiving email invitations from your child’s respective teachers asking you to join Class DOJO. Some of our teachers already use this platform, others are getting trained now remotely.    They will provide support to you as we navigate through Class DOJO and I think you will like the results.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions you may have.

We will be distributing paper packets to families on Friday, March 27th from 10:00 am -12:00 pm from Bell Oaks School. You may come to the administrative offices, which is across from the parking lot to pick up your materials.

Thank you,

Annette Castiglione

Gracias,

Annette Castiglione

Dear Parents,

Tuesday, March 17, 2020 marks the first day of school closures and remote learning for our students. There are a few important details you should take note of:

  1. Nutri Serve our Food Services Vendor will offer breakfast and lunch to our families in 10-day supply boxes.  You can come to the Bell Oaks Cafeteria.  The Bell Oaks address is 256 Anderson Avenue and the cafeteria is at the back of the parking lot.  Food will be distributed Tuesday 3-17-2020 from 10:00 am -12:00pm Mrs. McCue, the director, will be onsite supervising distribution of food. We will reevaluate future food distribution on March 30,2020.
  2. Our Technology Coordinator will be available from 10:00- 12:00 each day for technology equipment repairs.  You can make an appointment with him directly by emailing support@bellmawrschools.org.
  3. Our instructional technologist, Dana Litwornia, will be available for instructional support by emailing her at dlitwornia@bellmawrschools.org.
  4. If you have any questions about your child’s schoolwork you should email his/her teacher directly. Your principals will be available via email as well and you may call 856-931-3620 extension 1315, to reach the District Superintendent, Annette Castiglione.  You can also email at acastiglione@bellmawrschools.org.
  5. Teachers have uploaded instruction to their individual web pages. This may be in the form of a link that takes you to a learning management system such as Google Classroom or Microsoft teams. Teachers will be available via email during the day. Please be patient in waiting for a response from them as each one has his/her own family obligations. It is the expectation that students will complete the daily work teachers have assigned.
  6. There is a parent support section on the web page that houses many instructional and fun activity websites that you may wish to use throughout the days that the children are home.
  7. CARE (before and after school services) will be suspended while the district is closed. All families will receive a two-week (50%) credit on the May invoice when they are released in early April. In the meantime, we will suspend all late fees on existing invoices.
  8. Guidance services will be available via email or phone conferences. You should contact your child’s respective counselor directly if you have any questions.
  9. Child Study Team Director is arranging for the continuation of annual reviews. If this applies to you someone in that office will be in contact with you regarding that appointment.

I urge you to refer to the district web and Facebook pages each day for updates. We will be issuing global messages throughout the closure to provide you with the most current information.  Please understand that we are receiving new information daily and it is possible that the environment can change within an hour’s notice. I ask for your patience and flexibility as well as your understanding.

Stay safe and well!

Annette Castiglione
