Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time. Launched in fall 2014, we are a nonprofit organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support and reward schools as they pursue sustainability programs.

Sustainable Jersey certification is a prestigious designation. Sustainable Jersey for Schools helps schools to pursue a balanced sustainability program one policy, program, or resource audit at a time. Your school can start slowly and see how each small step yields meaningful gains. Registration is free and grants will be available. Bronze certification means a school has made a commitment to sustainability and succeeded in implementing significant first steps, while silver certification means a school has made significant progress in a number of categories toward sustainability and is a state-wide and national leader.

The Bellmawr School District is honored to announce that each of the schools received Bronze level of certification in just the first year of participating in this exciting endeavor! Each level of certification requires the establishment of a mandatory green team. Schools accumulate points for taking actions in a variety of categories in the respective certification level. Along with attaining a certain number of points, a number of “priority actions” must be completed in order to qualify for certification. The associated number of points, priority actions, and actions taken within a certain number of categories for bronze and silver certification listed below must be met.

The bronze level of certification requires:

The establishment of a mandatory green team

Implementation of 2 OUT OF 11priority actions

Actions must be completed in 6 OF 17 categories

A total of 150 points

In 8 short months, all three schools achieved this designation by accomplishing the requirements in these actions. Some of our activities included mini greenhouse gardening, hosting a Green Fair, serving Breakfast After the Bell, Walk to School Day. Please be on the lookout for future projects as we begin the 17-18 academic year. We look forward to expanding our efforts throughout Bellmawr and hope you will join us.
